Comparing Baby Soaps
The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Popularity Score reflects how often readers click on and buy the product. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.
How We Selected Soap For Baby
Before having my own babies, I didn’t realize how important it is to use clean and safe products on their delicate skin.
Since the FDA does not regulate cosmetic products, the Environmental Work Group (EWG) has created a database of products. It offers information on the most popular products and ingredients, such as whether the product is an irritant/allergen or linked to organ/reproductive toxicities. It rates products from 1 to 10, with 1 being the least toxic. It is best to stick to products that rate EWG verified, 1 or 2.
According to the EWG (Environmental Working Group), products like soaps and shampoos can expose babies to 50% unhealthy chemicals on a regular basis. This makes it vital to get products that are as natural as possible for your baby.
The criteria we set forth helped us find only the best and cleanest soaps and cleansers you can buy.
Natural Ingredients
We looked for soaps that were made without dangerous and harsh chemicals. These include sulfates, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and dyes, as well as other things like mineral oil, petroleum, or dioxins. The list of ingredients left out of the soap was just as important as what was put into it.
Organic ingredients such as Calendula, chamomile, essential oils, or aloe vera are all highly favored as were things like plant-based ingredients. Some soaps even avoided using thickening agents, so they maintained a more watery feel than traditional soap. However, even essential oils can irritate the skin.
Perfumes and Dyes
Babies smell good all on their own and don’t need any extra perfumes. If a particular soap has too heavy of a scent, it likely means it’s using a synthetic fragrance and therefore can irritate sensitive skin. Look for soaps that are either unscented like Aquaphor’s shampoo and wash or ones that have a light scent due to the natural ingredients and not because extra fragrance was added.
Added dyes can also irritant sensitive baby skin. Bright colored soaps look fun, but they contain artificial color and aren’t good for baby’s skin. Look for clear soaps or those that state they have no synthetic or artificial colors or dyes added.
FAQs About Soap For Baby
Many of the ingredients included in these products are controversial, or have limited or no data/research on use for babies. Some ingredients have been linked to health problems. Many products have not been evaluated by the FDA. Since no studies have been conducted with these products on babies there is no absolute certainty that these are 100% safe. Always consult with your pediatrician before starting any products on your baby.
What is the best soap for a newborn?
The best soap for a newborn is one without any added fragrance or dyes. Aquaphor or Earth Mama are rated 1 by EWG and may be gentle enough for newborn skin.
Is baby soap tear-free?
The short answer is yes, all the soaps we reviewed touted being tear-free. There are a couple of soaps that state they are but reviews said otherwise. This is why it’s important if you are worried about getting a tear-free soap, to get an unscented one with no added dyes.
Is soap good for babies?
Yes, babies get dirty just like all of us and need to be cleaned. Babies can be washed every day, but consult with your pediatrician. If you don’t want to use soap on your baby as often, you can use the Mustela No-Rinse wash applied with a cotton ball to keep your baby clean and fresh in between baths.
Should you use soap for baby acne?
While baby acne is nothing to worry about according to the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology), using a mild soap won’t hurt but you should never scrub it. Avoid using oily soaps and lotions on it as well. Try a non-drying mild and gentle soap that can be used on the face like Dr. Bronners Pure Castile Soap.
Can I wash my baby’s hair with soap?
Yes, all the soaps we reviewed can be used as both a body wash and a shampoo. However, we do have a list of the best baby shampoos. It also never hurts to start with natural body products before your baby is even born, so here is a list of the best pregnancy-safe shampoo to try.
What’s the problem with sulfates and parabens?
Sulfates are well known for their ability to make things like soap and shampoo lather but they can build up in your body over time and prolonged use and cause problems. Because of this, more and more companies are doing away with sulfates, also known as SLS or SLES.
Parabens are widely known to be added to body products such as deodorants, shampoo, etc. to stop bacteria and fungus growth. However, it has been largely found to disrupt hormone function, so companies are now making products without parabens.
