Before you pick a pair or two of jeans, let’s look at a few factors to help you make the best choice for you.
Jean Rise
You will notice we did not put a single pair of low-rise jeans on this list. Sorry, ladies, those jeans are not your friend right now. Feel free to reassess the situation in a couple of months, but just after the baby comes, you are going to want the support you can find with mid-rise and high-rise jeans.
Mid-rise sits just below your belly button while high-rise sits at or below your navel. Not everyone likes the feel of jeans on their belly button; if so, you need to pick mid-rise. Eventually, you can get back into low-rise, which sits about 2 inches under your belly button.
The good news is, mid-rise and high-rise tend to elongate you and draw attention away from your postpartum stomach.
Stretch Your Curves
The most important aspect of postpartum jeans is a stretchy material, which means you need elastane or spandex mixed into the fabric. A pair of jeans with more elastane or spandex will have more give. Most stretch pants offer two percent stretchy fabric.
For more forgiving pants, you want to get pants with 3 to 7 percent stretchy material. Mind you, the more stretch, the less likely they will hold their shape all day, though. A belly band can help to keep extra stretchy pants in check, as can a belt.
Compressing Your Belly
A few pairs of pants are like magical unicorns with built-in tummy panels ready to help you suck in without any of the work. Not everyone finds these pants comfortable, and they can be hotter, too, especially if worn in warmer climates. Try a pair on before you buy to see if you like them.
However, moms who are having a harder time fitting into their pre-pregnancy jeans may find these jeans give them a confidence boost. Now put on your favorite lipstick and start feeling like you again.
Get the Right Fit
Not all moms shrink back down to their normal belly back. The sad truth is you may still look pregnant for a few months! You created an entire human in your belly, and it’s going to take some time to bounce back, so do not get too upset.

Should I keep my maternity jeans?
You can wear your maternity jeans as long as you need and feel comfortable. Honestly, they are so forgiving I considered wearing them permanently. Keep them around until you feel comfortable wearing regular pants.
Often regular pants can be very uncomfortable for postpartum bellies, and there is no rush back to regular pants. Then again, if you hate maternity pants, don’t feel like you need to continue wearing them either. Do save them until you are sure you won’t get pregnant again so you can save some money in the future.
Can I just wear pajamas for the first couple of weeks?
Again, you can wear whatever you want after you grow and birth a child. If anyone gives you a mean or snarky look or says something rude, send them my way, and I will have a few choice words with them. Just kidding…kind of.
Seriously, you need to worry about yourself, your body, and your baby. Whatever makes you recover from the trauma of childbirth is what you should wear. You probably won’t be leaving the house a whole lot anyway, so no point in dressing in something uncomfortable.
