Certain plastics contain toxic chemicals that can be particularly harmful to the growth and development of children. Since young kids often put everything in their mouths, there is an even bigger push to avoid toys and other baby items, such as sippy cups and teething toys, that contain dangerous ingredients.
Two of those chemicals are Phthalates and Bisphenol A, or BPA for short. They are plastics, often called “everywhere chemicals,” because they are commonly found in items we use every day, such as water bottles, food packaging, and cosmetics. Another common one is PVC (soft vinyl plastic) that often contains lead and phthalates. Products that likely contain PVC are flexible plastic toys, such as rubber duckies, dolls, beach balls, etc.
Some health concerns of the chemicals listed above include cancers, hormone disruption, and birth defects. Research shows children are especially vulnerable to the negative effects because their bodies are so small. A small dose for an adult could be a big dose for a child.
In the last few years, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency that oversees product safety regulations, permanently banned the use of phthalates in concentrations of more than 0.1 percent in kid’s toys that can be placed in a child’s mouth.

Why do many websites discourage buying toys made in China?
As recently as November 2019, the European Environmental Bureau put out a notice saying it was facing a flood of dangerously contaminated toys made in China.

How to clean bath toys?
Squirt toys make bath time a whole lot more fun, but they can be a pain to clean. And if you never clean them, the toys can develop mold and bacteria, which is a huge health and safety concern.
The good news is they are fairly easy to clean, using the following methods:
- Use vinegar. The common household item is a natural cleaner and disinfectant. Mix half a cup of vinegar with one gallon of water and submerge the toys in the solution for about an hour. Rinse well and let them dry completely.
- Use the dishwasher if toy labels indicate that it is safe to do so. Squeeze as much water out of the bath toy as possible and put them on the top rack of the dishwasher for easy sanitizing.
- Use boiling water. Bring a pot of water to a boil and drop the toys in for a few minutes. Squeeze out the water (and gunk) and let them cool and dry completely.
Experts recommend cleaning bath toys once a week. If you don’t want to deal with the added chore, simply plug the squirt holes using a hot glue gun to create a waterproof seal. No more squirting, but the toys will still float and offer creative play ideas in the bath for your kiddos!
