The Affordable Joovy Scooter X2 Review – Do the Pros Outweigh the Cons?

Editor’s Note

The Joovy Scooter X2 is still available for purchase, however, there is a newer, updated option with many of the same features of the Scooter X2.  The Joovy Kooper X2 has some updated features, including snack trays that easily fold with the stroller.  It is more lightweight at 28 lbs versus the 32 lbs, plus it is slightly smaller than the Stroller X2.  The Kooper X2 also has a higher weight capacity of 100 lbs versus the 90 lb weight limit of our reviewed, older stroller.  It is slightly more expensive but if the snack tray, lightweight option, and higher maximum weight limit are important features, then you may want to consider the newer version of Joovy’s double strollers.

Whether you call it a stroller, buggy, trolley, or pram, all parents know it is necessary to have an easy way to transport your little ones while you are out and about, so that (hopefully) you don’t get stuck carrying them the whole time!

When it comes to double strollers, the Joovy Scooter X2 provides quality while costing a fraction of the price of similar side by side strollers on the market. The Joovy Scooter comes in black and four other vibrant colors. It has an appealing design and is jam-packed with neat features. But with mixed reviews, do the pros outweigh the cons?

Key Features

Able to fit through tight spaces

I tend to overthink things – one thing I always worry about is maneuvering my son in his stroller when we are out and about. Double and triple strollers can be even harder to maneuver around obstacles because they are typically wider and heavier.

The Joovy ScooterX2 addresses this issue because it is only 30 inches wide, allowing it to fit through standard doorways. While not as narrow as a tandem stroller (one child in front of the other), it cleanly fits through areas that other side by side strollers do not. It also was recently redesigned with bigger front wheels, allowing for even more maneuverability.

Plenty of storage space

With children comes the burden of hauling around their much-needed accessories everywhere you go. Between a diaper bag, toys, and your own purse or bag, you can find yourself carrying a lot around when you go out.

Luckily, the Joovy Scooter has a very large storage basket underneath the seats. What parent doesn’t appreciate the value of extra storage? The Joovy Scooter provides all the storage you need whether you are running a quick errand to the grocery store or a day trip to the zoo. There are even two cup holders and zippered pockets for your phone, wallet, or other valuables.

Seats recline separately

The Joovy Scooter X2 allows for each seat to be reclined separately, meaning your children do not have to always have to be seated at the same recline position. This way you can have your napping infant laying down and your alert toddler in a seated position.

The seats are adjusted using a draw-string type of mechanism, meaning they can be adjusted to any reclining position that you want – the seats aren’t limited to just two or three positions.

Each seat has a five point harness to ensure your little ones stay safely seated and each seat has a maximum weight limit of 45 pounds, allowing for many years of use.

Easy to fold

The Joovy Scooter features the “one hand fold” mechanism, making it quick and easy to fold up for storage. It simply folds in half and fits in most trunks – see below for more about dimensions:

Dimensions

  • 32 pounds
  • 14″H x 30″W x 35.75″L

The stroller itself weighs 32 pounds and is 14″H x 30″W x 35.75″L in dimension when folded up. This isn’t extremely heavy for a stroller, especially a side by side stroller, but make sure to check the size of your trunk before purchasing it to ensure that it will fit. It also may be strategic to figure out if you will have any space left over in your trunk after you put the stroller in. That way you can ensure you have space for groceries or other belongings in your trunk as well.

Because the Joovy Scooter stroller comes in at 32 pounds, it definitely is not an umbrella stroller. However, it is relatively lightweight compared to other side by side strollers. The popular BOB double stroller, for example, is 36 pounds.

Large Canopy

The Joovy Scooter X2 comes equipped with an oversized canopy (one of the largest on the market) to provide plenty of shade for your little passengers. The canopy also has a peekaboo window so you can check on your kiddos while you walk.

Bumper Bar

The Joovy Scooter features a bumper bar for kids to hang on to or to rest their feet on. I prefer strollers with a bumper bar because I feel like it gives that extra layer of safety to ensure my son stays in the seat. The bumper bar is removable, making it easy to get your children in and out of the seats.

Summary of features:

  • Narrow and lightweight
  • Plenty of storage
  • Independently reclining seats
  • Easy to fold
  • Large canopy provides sufficient shade
  • Comes in 5 different vibrant colors
  • Removable bumper bar
  • 2 cup holders for parents
  • Zippered pockets for phones and other valuable belongings

Concerns

Not adjustable for parents

While the Joovy ScooterX2 provides comfort and adjustability for the children riding in it, unfortunately, it is not so adjustable for the parent pushing it. If you are above average height, you may want to consider the following issues:

  • The handlebar sits relatively low so if you are above average in height, you may find yourself hunching over to push this stroller.
  • There is a brake bar in between the back wheels which you may find yourself hitting with your feet while walking.

This may not seem terrible if you aren’t planning on using the stroller a whole lot, it quickly becomes painful to push a stroller that has a low handlebar! I bought my umbrella stroller even though the reviews urged the handles were too low and now I rarely use it now because it is so uncomfortable to push!

Not good for off-road adventures

The Joovy Scooter X2 is suitable if you are looking for a walking or jogging stroller to take around the neighborhood. While this stroller is great on smooth sidewalks and pavement, it does not do so well on bumpy surfaces such as gravel or off-road areas.

If you are looking for a stroller for walks around the mall or on the smooth streets and sidewalks of your neighborhood, this will do well. But if you are looking for something to take on a hike or for other off-road adventures, you may want to look elsewhere.

Can’t attach car seat

The minimum age recommended for this stroller is 3 months so if you are looking to put your newborn in, you would need to wait because unfortunately there is not a car seat adapter for it either.

Does not commute well

Although easy to fold, the Joovy Scooter X2 is hard to carry around if you are planning on bringing it with you on public transportation. There is no real handle, making it tricky to lift and carry. It also will not stand on its own, something that can be annoying when traveling by bus or train.

Price

The Joovy Scooter X2 is a moderately priced double stroller. Other side by side strollers, such as the BOB Double, are priced higher than most on the market. The Joovy Scooter X2 is a much cheaper option, but still provides the quality that you expect in a product that you plan to use for many years to come.

Pros

  • Narrow enough to fit through doorways (30 inches wide)
  • Huge basket to carry things
  • Easy to maneuver & fold
  • Great quality for the price
  • Seats recline separately
  • Sleek design
  • Large canopy

Cons

  • Not good on grass, bumpy sidewalks – anything other than smooth pavement
  • May not be for tall people-can’t adjust height of handlebar
  • No car seat adapter; not for infants under 3 months of age
  • Not good for public transportation

My Recommendation

If you are looking for a double stroller for your two little ones and are on a budget, I think the Joovy Scooter X2 is an excellent product for you. Consider what you will be using this stroller for, though, because if you are looking for a stroller to take hiking or for a similar outdoor activity, you may want to look elsewhere because this does not do too well on bumpy terrain. Also take into consideration that it does not adjust for the parent, and is tricky to travel with.

So, to answer my question: Do the pros outweigh the cons? Yes. As you can see, there are just a few areas of concern with the Joovy Scooter, and many of them will not affect all people. The Joovy X2 is highly rated and seems to give you the best value for your money compared to similar models.
