For birthdays, they get a party every other year. The party is their main gift and costs about $200 or a little more if we hold the party at an event. They get a small gift under $50 to go with the party. For the years when they do not get a party, we spend about $100 to $200 on a gift. Usually, this is on something that needs replacing like an iPad or a game console or computer.
For holidays, we spend around $300 per kid. That includes a big present, stocking stuffers, and a Christmas Eve gift, which is always pajamas and a book. Sometimes, instead of a big gift, we buy around three smaller gifts instead. We have such a large family that the kids get tons of presents under the tree and I rarely feel like I need to stuff in more boxes.
Mind you, I shop year-round and find stuff on sale. So for me, the value is often more than I spent. Each family is different but I do suggest you do not go into massive debt for a single holiday unless you are traveling far away to Switzerland for skiing or something similar.

Do 14-year-old girls still play with Barbies?
They used to, but not anymore. Most girls are so self-conscious that even if they still want to play with dolls or other toys, they won’t because their friends might find out. Not to mention the draw of electronics and virtual reality is far more fascinating than all the hard work of playing with a doll.
If your daughter does still want to play with Barbies at 14, let her. There is absolutely nothing wrong with prolonging pretend play. That is essentially what computer games are anyways. Just be sure not to mention her enjoyment of Barbies to anyone outside of the house and make sure her siblings respect her privacy, too.
